Van Gogh time; this one painted from memory during his good spells. His mental battles only took off in his last 2 years. His brother died not long after, so it was his sister-in-law Jo who made the effort to point out to the world what they had hitherto missed.

Rubens and others painted on a similar theme, but only Goya's effort seems horrific. The old Spaniard was deaf, didn't paint it for public consumption, and may even not have used that title.
