GB women have beaten Japan 9-3 for their second win of the day and moved to 4 wins and 4 losses. One more match tomorrow that they must win before hoping other results go their way.

And the rest of today’s matches have been fantastically entertaining for a neutral.

Denmark looked set to upset Switzerland, leading 4-3 going into the final end — only for Switzerland to score three in the tenth and secure their place in the semis.

Then it looked like Canada was in control of its own must-win match against Italy, leading by 2 or 3 for most of the game. Then Italy stole 3 in the tenth to tie it up and send it to an extra end. Canada squeaked through with one final draw.

It really is like chess on ice!

I liken it more to bowls - but on ice!!

I once heard curling described as bowls with saucepans but the reality is somewhat more complex and fascinating than all that .

^ I wonder if they could make that an Olympic sport Snooks? size limited 15 cm shorten the handle and away we go - probably would be good for the Summer Games too on specially created type of magnetic rink or something? (Sponsored by Tefal)

Italy lost to Switzerland meaning Team GB Men are into the curling semi finals at 6.35pm this evening.

Canada v Norway

Yayy!!

Yes it's a huge sigh of relief for Bruce Mouat's World number one ranked team.
Switzerland are unbeaten with 9 straight wins in the round robin. GB have snuck in with 5 wins and 4 losses.

But knockout curling is a different beast to round robin. The intensity goes up a few notches. Four years ago the GB women snuck into the semi finals with the same 5 & 4 record as the men this year.
They beat the round robin topping Sweden and went on to win Gold.
In the mixed doubles of these Games GB finished top of the round robin with 8 wins from 9 but lost to Sweden who only just scraped into the semi finals. From there Sweden won Gold while GB ended up 4th.

So anything could happen. Strap yourselves in for a shredsville semi final.

Before all that though it's shredsville for the women. The GB team must beat Italy and hope other results go their way to make the last four this afternoon.

GB women obliged their part of the bargain. They have seen off Italy 7-4.

Now they need Switzerland to somehow force a steal against USA in an extra end.
They couldn't. Could they?

No. USA won 7-6. GB are out.
Not a bad Games though from the girls.
Three of the quartet had no Olympic experience at all. Rebecca Morrison was particularly impressive. Definitely a team worth sticking with for the future as it shows genuine promise .

going to be tense for the men though as Swiss have won all their matches but we beat Swiss to win the World title last April so there is hope & Skip Bruce Mouat has been on ice for 16 days consecutively competing
