It's like a divorcing couple. When you are at that stage of throwing dishes and threatening divorce, nothing is possible. I want it all, you can't have any of it, f**k you and the horse you rode in on. But once the decision is made, tempers cool, pragmatism kicks in and the lawyers bills start to add up ... then everything is just a negotiation.

Take the EU issue. I don't doubt that EU ministers have thrown cold water all over it. But seriously ... they were about to accept Georgia. They were in the process of letting in the Ukraine. They've let in all of the Baltic states, which have only been states for a couple of decades. In what twisted, bizarro, Belgian calculation does in NOT make sense to let in an independent Scotland?

In short ... pre-referendum, this is all just political brinksmanship. In the event of a "yes" vote, post-referendum will be all economics all the time. If it makes economic sense, it will happen. If it doesn't it won't.

Well if today showed a little something is that the SNP need to Sort there arses out with a plan "B" with regards to finance and currency because pound took a 11 month low against dollar and Euro and 1.5bn was wiped of share price with most of the scottish shares or anything connected with scotland going down on just the hint of a yes vote

And to anyone who belives they will cave in and let you have monatary union then you are in cloud cuckoo land its the tories you know they are bastards youve been trying to get rid of them by voting yes Do you honestly think they will set you up with a fair deal

The trouble with this whole issue is that the question of independence has now become a murky quagmire. If the vote on the 18th is a yes then it will not be so much down to a successful yes campaign but more a gross mishandling of the no vote.
It is now nothing more than a collection of confusing reactionary policies. Who leads the No campaign, Cameron and the Tory elite? Darling? Brown? There seems to be no direction and it really does look like panic has set in.
If the truth be known the feeling among the No vote campaigners has been that they would walk the referendum easily. Now that the Yes vote is gathering momentum then they have begun to run a little scared, hence the panic and confusion.
Personally I hope the Scottish remain part of the UK and instead concentrate all their effort in helping the rest of us get rid of Cameron and his toff cronies.

In the event of Scotland voting yes...
They will have a parliment where there's only one of the parties who want independance. The other parties are for a Union.

So what happens when the Scots want a change of their govenment to say Labour. And Labour want a united Britain but are they tied to staying independant

See this is the bit I disagree with. In the unlikely event of independence, how does it help England to have a basket case banana republic on its doorstep? Provided that it doesn't actually hurt our economy, then surely it is in our own interests for an independent Scotland to be as stable and as prosperous as possible.

If monetary union helps that cause, then why wouldn't we do it? Montery union is a concession of economic independence from the country that doesn't control the central bank, not the one that does.

To be fair, it is not as clear cut as that and -- as clearly demonstrated by Greece recently -- there are certainly downsides to letting another country use your currency. But there are benefits too and, in this case, I personally think that those outweigh the risks.

[For starters, we could get rid of Scottish banknotes, thus avoiding those awkward conversations with London cabbies and pizza delivery guys about how Scottish banknotes are actually legal tender!]

At any rate, it is definitely a debate to be had. The blanket, knee-jerk reaction of saying 'it's our currency and you can't use it' sounds more like a punitive political threat than a level-headed economic argument. Fair enough as banter on an Internet forum, but it is that kind of unnecessarily emotive language from our politicians through the media that, I think, has given a real boost to the "Yes" campaign. Nobody likes a bully.

It also breeds the feeling of uncertainty and panic and THAT is what is affecting the financial markets. Financial markets coped with German reunification, European monetary union, the dissolution of Czechoslovakia, the break-up of the Soviet Union, etc... In historical terms, do you really think that an independent Scotland -- of all places! -- will cause anything but a *blip* in bond prices and the stock market? Oh those profligate, free-spending, tax-dodging Scots ... just like the Greeks, they are... Please.

I do agree with one thing though ... bloody tories! They talked about the wrong things, in the wrong way, throughout this campaign. They have brought the panic on themselves. This should have been about our shared history and nationhood and values and our place in the world. Instead they turned it into a slanging match about who could yell the most preposterous economic bollocks the loudest. A pox on both our houses!

the main reason is for any montary union then scotland would have to follow UK tax and spend policys so why would any scottish goverment want to do that

I think westminister is concerned because they will spend all the oil revenue on buildin a socialist republic and then need bailing out in 30 years or so way after salmond and the others have gone

also Eck is droning on about europe today so he really wants to be part of europe so why have a currency union if he is going to change his mind in 5 years time and want to be in europe

The repercussions for the rest of the UK could be immense if Scotland votes Yes. I was reading that its highly unlikely that Labour would get into power ever again if this happens, given that so many Labour voters come from Scotland. God help those of us without blue blood if that is true

Thats bollocks labour would have still won the last 3 they won but with smaller majorities

There are 59 Scottish MPs.

1997 Labour Majority - 179.

2001 Labour Majority - 167.

2005 Labour Majority - 66.

Seriously wish this nightmare would end its on 24 hours a day comes to something when you wish something else would happen just to change the bloody news agenda Ive had to start watching Fox News Because its even on CNN !!! seriously hope you lot vote NO Because if not it will last another 2 years with all the negotiations then actually going independent then the story of how its going 1 year later 5 year 10 year later
