Think it was in Scotland to get a resupply for the crew. Who ever is crewing it at the moment. Believe the intent is for it to sail to the US. A good thing to clamp down on the shadow fleets. Russia not in the greatest position to respond either which is also good.

Trump threatening tariffs if he's not allowed to buy Greenland is already a step back from just taking it.

The granular effect of tariffs is as complex as Angelstarq suggests. But, more generally, tariffs are pretty simple: they are just a manipulation of relative prices by government fiat.

Leaving aside the fact that this flies in the face of free-market conservative orthodoxy, they are a legitimate lever to pull for an economic strategy. But it’s really only an economic strategy when tariffs are applied selectively and strategically. Usually when the tariff is sector-specific to correct some perceived ‘market failure’ (e.g. protection of infant industries, national security reasons, supply-chain resilience, etc.). When tariffs are indiscriminately applied to whole nations or trading blocks, they are less about economic strategy than they are a geopolitical tool.

Tariffs on Canadian lumber, auto parts and maple syrup are an economic strategy; tariffs on “Canada” is just politics.

That said, you always need to differentiate between what Trump says and what the Trump administration actually does. Trump talks about tariffs in simplistic, political terms. Canada is mean to us, so we’re gonna tax’em! In fact, there are so many exemptions and exclusions that they are all a lot more benign than most people assume. Neither a cure-all for the American economy, nor a disaster for the Canadian one.

Anyway, I’ve forgotten most of what I learned from two economics degrees. But back then we talked about tariffs the way doctors talk about leaches.
