FIFA should have seen it coming a long time ago and should have reiterated to Tango Man what they expected the hosts to do and that is to welcome all fans, teams player etc, and what we are now seeing is the ultimate embarrassment to Sport. Now is the time for the IOC to act swiftly and move the Games to Canada in 2028 and give Canada the cash to rebuild the 76 Olympics Stadium, even if Trump isn't President, a real lesson should be learned from this fucking mess as it will take the US a long time to recover from this.

The xenophobic, anti-immigration, Trumpian nonsense is a fresh twist, but the pre-competition hysteria is all part of the ritual of every major sporting event.

I remember a lovely line by a journalist ahead of the Sochi Winter Olympics. To paraphrase: “The reporting of every Olympic Games follows the same trajectory. It starts with, ‘OMG the venues aren’t ready’, and it ends with ‘OMG they’re running out of condoms in the Athletes Village’.”

The British press is especially guilty of this. They LOVE to report scaremongering horror stories and doom-and-gloom forecasts about every international event that ISN’T an Olympic Games in London in 2012.

I’m not saying there isn’t something very ugly and deeply sinister about refusing entry to Somali referees or dynamic pricing that locks out real fans. It’s all uniformly awful.

But I’m doubtful that this is some sort of existential crisis for FIFA, for football, or the World Cup. In a few days they’ll start playing football and all our indignation will be redirected to the latest VAR decision or the penalty that should have been. The earth will continue to spin and football will go marching on.

In some ways you're right. The last World Cup was terrible for so many reasons, all until "That Final" which just seemed to eclipse everything. If it had been a dull as dish water the headlines may have been different but in the end Messi's world cup covered over a multitude of sins.
