RE: David Hockney RIP
Loved his work, especially when he moved to the East Riding of Yorkshire living in Bridlington from the late 1990's through to around 2013.He increased the tourist industry in the lesser known Yorkshire Words which gets overlooked by the more famous Dales & North Yorkshire Moors, but the scenery in no less less pleasing to the eye.
Having just checked, it was 2011 when I visited Ferens Art Gallery in Hull which was exhibiting what was his largest painting to date titled Bigger Trees Near Warter a 40 X 15 ft scale which was made up of 50 individual canvasses. It is a part of theWolds that I was already familiar with as it is great walking country & the nearby market town of Pocklington has family connections. The painting is now part of the Tate collection.
Despite his age, Hockney embraced modern tech & latterly created I Pad paintings,17 of which sold for £6.2 million last year. His most famous painting has to be Bigger Splash from his time spent in LA California. David also lived in France, initially Paris before moving to Normandy which led to the work A Year In Normandy, a 90 metre panorama which depicts the countryside of the area season by season. Inspired by the Bayeux Tapestry, it was previously displayed alongside the great works but is now at the Serpentine London.
The largest Hockney collection is in the Saltaire Museum which I would highly recommend.
Hockney had synaesthesia, a neurological condition where music in his case stimulates colour, which explains many of his vibrant works.
RIP David
