Multi upload is a great altertive, it's what I use for my music shares, simple to use and uploads to several hosts on your behalf

Its a good idea in some respects, but changing the edit settings can only be implemented for all members, and for a few reasons is something I'd prefer not to do.

But busy is fine, and links can be replaced, or other edits made to posts, pretty quickly.

Easiest thing is for people to create a download space and put a single link in their sig rather than they editing all the old posts

Another option people might want to consider. I use this outfit for backups :

$30 for one year, $40 for two. Unlimited space, various options for uploading, I mainly use rsync, but ftp works as well and there is also a web-based frontend, and even dav, so you can set it up as a network drive on your system.

I'm not saying they are the most reliable, they use dynamic storage, so they add more as required, so I often get 'no space left on drive' errors until they boost the space for that folder and I can upload more (but bear in mind I have over 200GB on there), and they also aren't as fast as I would like, but they are certainly cheap, and may be good enough for storing and sharing vids (they have a shared folder option similar to the likes of dropbox).
I just use them for backups, so can't vouch for their speed or reliabiltiy for file-sharing, but this or similar services may be worth considering rather than the traditional file-hosters, even if used alongside a free file-hoster account as backup so you don't lose everything if things go bad.

I just saw the news, about megaupload being shut down, on the BBC 24 hour news this morning.
The very first video that I posted on this forum, soon after I joined over 3 years ago, was at megaupload. It is also my most prized video. It was "Antonia backstage live" which was broadcast in the 11pm TelevisionX unencrypted preview show on Freeview in mid 2008. This got them a large fine from ofcom. I switched over to using rapidshare several months later and only about 25% of my approx 300 vids uploaded to the forum were with megaupload.
The main advantage with megaupload that I've only realised since posting my last vid 6 months ago is that they don't automatically delete old files. I now regularly get emails from rapidshare informing me that a certain vid will be deleted since it has not been downloaded in the last month. I cannot be bothered to download them myself so they are slowly disappearing.

so im guessing the replacement host for most uploaders here is now Multiupload.

Well it is for me at present. I'm not getting any improvement in download speed from them, but I am getting a big improvement in upload speed compared to what I got with the mega sites. It takes me less than an hour to upload a 500 MB file with Multiupload. It would have taken me twice that with MegaUpload.

Sad day for the internet didnt think id be watching headlines about megaupload on the news tonight are they gonna be able to do this with other sites like rapidshare, multiupload etc.

Who knows? If the feds can take down one of the 10 most popular sites, without even SOPA being passed yet. Then I think it's safe to say that no file sharing site is safe.

A lot of these money grubbing pricks are cutting their nose to spite their faces. Have they never heard of free advertising? People will download something watch it and a lot of them will go out and buy it because they like what they have seen, i know i have done my self. People who like a film would buy it any way, they like the packaging and better resolution. Most are goign for blu rays now and you have to buy them any way.

It's like the big boobies warners taking everything off you-tube, boo hoo you can't watched that you not over paid us, we'll cry. How many people will have watch a clip or trailer and gone out and bought the film or cd that normally would never do?
